And the vale of Siddim was full of slime pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain.

slime pits. Places where asphaltus or bitumen sprung out of the ground: this substance which is properly denoted by the word 'slime, ' abounds in these parts.
